Desired Future Conditions, PBC (DFC) is a mobile, in-woods biochar production company utilizing timber harvest waste to create high-quality biochar for soil amendment purposes. By locating operations on-site where harvest slash is commonly piled and burned, they address a gap in the market to tackle timber harvest emissions, wildfire fuels reductions, and diminished pulpwood markets.
DFC operates by contracting for waste and underutilized woody biomass on private certified forestlands, making biochar in the woods with mobile pyrolyzers, and selling it in end-use markets that continue sequestering carbon, generating CDR credits in the process.
DFC is currently contracted to deploy its first project, Piney Woods Biochar. It is in an early-stage capital raise to fund the pilot and testing phase of this project ahead of full-scale deployment, and is in active conversations with off-take buyers for both the physical biochar and the CDR credits the project will generate.
By paying pulpwood-like prices for biomass that might otherwise go unsold, DFC’s operations encourage broader fuels treatments, reducing the potential for catastrophic wildfires and the spread of insects and disease. Over its first 10 years, this project is expected to scale to 6 production rigs, generating an estimated $46.9 million in revenue and $14.3 million in net operating income for DFC from production and sales of 8,800 BDT of physical biochar and 22,000 CDR credits per year.
Each production rig runs a local, two-shift crew, putting steady jobs back into forest communities that have been hit by mill closures and shrinking pulpwood markets. This project scales to 6 mobile pyrolysis rigs over its first 10 years, part of a broader DFC pipeline built to reach 200+ rigs nationally by 2033.
Biochar locks carbon into a stable form for the long term. This project is expected to generate 2.5 tonnes of verified CO2-removal (CDR) credits for every ton of biochar produced.
By converting harvest slash that would otherwise be pile-burned or left to decay, this project reduces wildfire fuel loads and site-prep costs for landowners, while cutting the emissions from open burning and short-term decay. Biochar targets agriculture end use segments to improve soil health and optimize inputs.
