Three Oaks Carbon is empowering landowners to protect their forests by making forest protection financially viable for small-acreage landowners facing development pressure. The project is registered on the City Forest Credits, a national nonprofit carbon registry and certification organization dedicated to urban forests.
Forest preservation projects not only reduce carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but provide ecosystem services or co-benefits that can be quantified. The co-benefits from this project represent a savings (avoided costs) of $49,718 per year, and $1,988,720 over 40 years.
Three Oaks Carbon’s forest change detection dMRV tool identified canopy loss along the southern boundary of a property between July 1 and July 21, 2023, affecting approximately one-third of an acre. Before-and-after imagery confirmed the loss was due to illegal encroachment by a neighboring landowner. Because the alert came in near real time, the landowner was able to act immediately, halt additional forest clearing, and resolve the encroachment through their legal team.
