ABOUT

City Forest Credits is a national nonprofit carbon registry and certification organization dedicated to urban forests. They provide reliable and efficient pathways for the private-sector to contribute to green, healthy, and more equitable cities through high-value projects.

As urbanization accelerates, more than 80% of the U.S. population now resides in cities and towns, placing growing strain on urban green spaces. The country loses an estimated 36 million trees each year, representing about 22 to 132 million metric tons of CO₂—eroding valuable carbon sinks. This loss is unevenly distributed, as socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods often have 33–65% fewer trees than wealthier areas, deepening environmental inequities. Compounding the problem, public budgets devoted to tree care remain minimal—averaging only 0.31% of city spending nationwide. Meanwhile, remnant urban forests continue to face mounting development pressure, with construction accounting for nearly half (48.5%) of all tree removals.
